Katannilik Territorial Park

Katannilik means "the place of waterfalls." The many waterfalls start at the Kattannilik Park Centre. You'll learn about the geology of the park and about the community of Kimmirut.

From the Centre you can decide to:

  • hike the Itijjagiaq Trail onto the hills of the Meta Incognita Peninsula
  • canoe the Soper River and see the waterfalls
  • visit the reversing falls where Soper Lake drains into the ocean
  • go rock hunting for lapis lazuli
  • hike to Mount Joy to watch the peregrine falcons

The park is home to the tallest trees on Baffin Island. Dwarf Arctic Willow trees grow up to 10 feet high. Also unique to the park is one of the world's only deposits of lapis lazuli, a striking blue gemstone. Plan to arrive in Kimmirut at the time of the full moon or new moon to see the reversing falls where Soper Lake drains into the ocean.

The Soper River

The Soper River, a Canadian Heritage River, is a popular choice for canoeists. The lush Soper River valley passes through beautiful tundra of the Meta Incognita Peninsula from Kimmirut. Cliffs rise almost 1000 feet on both sides of the valley. You'll find an abundance of waterfalls and good whitewater all along your travels.

Enjoy hiking in the valley on your journey. You may spot caribou, wolves, arctic hare and ptarmigan on your hikes along the river valley.
